Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), founding member of the Dresden-based artist group “Die Brücke”, is one of the classical Modernism’s most influential artist personalities. A pioneer of Expressionist art, he produced some of the most groundbreaking formal solutions of his day, particularly in the area of printed graphics. The exhibition offers a representative overview of some of his most significant periods: early work showing studio and street scenes from Dresden and Berlin, summer stays on the Fehmarn island in the Baltic Sea as well as the later work produced in Davos. Kirchner’s drawings and printed graphics form the focus of the exhibition – the majority of which come from private collections and have rarely been shown until now – supplemented by excellent works from the Hamburger Kunsthalle permanent collection. This survey of drawings, graphics and paintings also sheds light on the artist’s working process, from the initial sketches to the final execution of the paintings. In doing so, Kirchner’s relationship to Hamburg is also expressly documented for the first time.
