In this section, we answer the service topics that visitors frequently ask us questions about. The canon of questions is listed with keywords in alphabetical order.
- Accessibility
- Mobility-impaired visitors can easily access all collection and exhibition rooms as well as the service facilities and event rooms, the restaurant The Cube and the café Das Liebermann.
- Wheelchairs are available free of charge whenever required. If requested, please make reservations at the visitors’ office from Mon to Fri (except public holidays): info@hamburger-kunsthalle.de or via tel. +49 (0)40 428131-200 (then press 2).
- Parking spaces for visitors with mobility impairments are available via the access road behind the Gallery of Contemporary Art, access can temporarily only be via the Außenalster (free of charge) and in the car park of the Gallery of Contemporary Art (subject to charges). (Please note that due to a major construction site at Ferdinandstor, access is only possible via the Outer Alster until 2025. The underground car park is closed until 31 October 2024 due to renovation work). You will need a parking permit to use the free parking spaces.
- We offer inclusive guided tours for people with disabilities. Find all information about the accessibility for your visit and the accessible guided tours.
- Admission Fees
- Please find our current admission prices including different types of reductions and/or exemptions here.
- Time slot tickets may be required for visits to certain exhibitions. In this case, we recommend advance booking via our online ticket shop. Time slot tickets define the time period within which the special exhibition can be entered. The length of stay in the exhibition is independent of this.
- For guided tours, the admission times for group participants are blocked in advance.
- Reservations or registrations via telephone are currently not possible. If you have any questions, please contact the visitors’ office between Mon and Fri (except public holidays): info@hamburger-kunsthalle.de or via tel. +49 (0)40 428131-200 (then press 2).
- For members of Freunde der Kunsthalle e. V. (Friends of the Kunsthalle) and the Malschulverein (Painting School Association), admission is free of charge all year round. Please find more information here.
- Vouchers of any amount are available at the museum ticket office. A voucher is valid for 3 years from the date of purchase if no other validity date is given (regular limitation period according to § 195 BGB). It may be extended by the museum’s statutory closing times.
- Box office opening hours: Tue – Sun, 10 am – 5.30 pm / Thu, 10 am – 8.30 pm.
- The Kunstmeilen-Ticket (Art Mile Ticket) grants free admission to all participating museums along the Art Mile (Bucerius Kunst Forum, Deichtorhallen, Museum für Kunst & Gewerbe, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Kunstverein Hamburg) once within a year (12 months ticket) or as often as desired within three days (3 days ticket). Prices and information can be found here. Its validity begins with the first visit. If applicable, it is extended by the museum’s statutory closing times.
- Annual Memberships
- The following two circles of friends are associated with the Hamburger Kunsthalle, among others:
- the association »Freunde der Kunsthalle e.V.«
- the »Malschulverein e.V.«
- As a member, you have free admission to the Kunsthalle all year round.
With an annual membership you support the museum’s work, the purchase of artworks, exhibitions and the work of the Education and Communication Department. - Please find more information here.
- Appraisals of Artworks
- Unfortunately, we are unable to provide valuations or expert opinions on works of art, as we are a museum and therefore not part of the art market.
- If – independent of a valuation – you would like to learn more about a painting, sculpture, graphic, photograph, in order to find out, for example, which artist it might be, what the work’s current state of preservation is and whether there is a need for restoration, what you can do to find out more about its origin (provenance research), please send us your specific questions with one or two photos (preferably including the reverse side) by e-mail to: info@hamburger-kunsthalle.de.
- Our library staff will be happy to assist you with research on the artist or similar: bibliothek@hamburger-kunsthalle.de.
- To find a certified art expert for an appraisal of your private art objects, in the sense of a valuation, you may contact the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, via tel.: +49 (0)40 36138-138 or e-mail: service@hk24.de. Or you can contact an auction house of your choice when it comes to selling a work of art.
- Restoration inquiries regarding paintings, graphic art, photography or sculpture should be sent to the VDR, Association of German Restorers, which recommends qualified restorers for paintings, graphic art, sculpture, etc. throughout Germany.
- For appraisals in connection with a donation or an offer of a permanent loan, please send us an e-mail including a photograph and available information on the work to: info@hamburger-kunsthalle.de.

- Audio Guide
- We offer an audio guide both for tours through the collection area and the current special exhibitions.
- This audio guide is available at the ticket desk as a loan device (8 € fee) or via the Hamburger Kunsthalle App. You can download it free of charge.
- The audio guide is available in German and English. For some tours, we additionally offer versions for children and in simple language.
- Cloakroom
Bags (larger than DIN A4), backsacks, umbrellas and items of luggage such as suitcases and trolleys must be deposited. Limited lockers are available in the old building for smaller suitcases (trolleys). You will need a 1-euro coin as a deposit to use them.
- Food & Drinks
- Visiting the Café DAS LIEBERMANN in the Lichtwarkgalerie is only possible with an admission ticket, as the café is located within the collection area.

- Guided Tours on Site
- We offer public tours and private tours, both as on-site events and in digital form.

- Registering for the public guided tour programme or making reservations for it is currently not possible.

- The library is a pure reference library. Admission to the library is free of charge.

- Museum Shop
- The museum shop, run by the association Freunde der Kunsthalle e.V., is open at the same hours as the museum: Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun, 10am to 6pm / Thu 10 am to 9 pm.
- It offers an extensive range of publications, stationery and gifts relating to the themes of the museum collection and current exhibitions. In addition to illustrated books, catalogues and theoretical writings on art, you will find a large selection of posters, postcards and artists’ editions, as well as unique design items and drawing supplies.

- Our regular opening hours are:
- Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun 10 am – 6 pm
- Thur 10 am – 9 pm

- Parking Facilities
- You can park for a fee in the underground car park under the Galerie der Gegenwart. Please note: In addition, the underground parking garage in the Galerie der Gegenwart will be closed until the end of the year 2024 for renovation. We recommend the use of public transport during this period.
- The free disabled parking spaces (for holders of a parking permit) can also be reached via Ferdinandstor. Use the service entrance behind the Galerie der Gegenwart. There are three parking spaces designated for disabled persons directly to the left of the main entrance.
- Pets
- For safety reasons, no pets are allowed in the museum.
- Exceptions are made for guide dogs or other trained assistance dogs that are needed for escort purposes.
- Photography & Filming
Taking photos and filming for private use is permitted, however, without using a tripod or flash. The use of flash and tripod may be permitted by prior special permission. Private use excludes any publication or transfer of such images to third parties. The authors of the images are responsible for their actions. Particularly concerning photographs and moving images of contemporary works of art, please note: works by living artists and those who have been deceased for less than 70 years are protected by copyright. Reproduction rights must be respected, likewise. Accordingly, any use of images of the artists’ works requires prior clarification with the copyright holders.
- Publication of photos and videos in social media: we welcome photos from our showrooms in social media. Please observe the applicable copyrights. These must be obtained from the copyright holders before publication. The copyrights do not apply if an artist has been deceased for more than 70 years (before 1952).
- Information on photography and filming for non-private purposes (press, commercial and industrial shoots, etc.) can be found here.
- You may acquire reproduction rights of works of art for commercial use through the picture agency that represents us, which is bpk.
- For a printing permission for scientific purposes, please contact: info@hamburger-kunsthalle.de.
- Please address requests regarding the possibility of wedding shoots and film shoots at the Kunsthalle to: veranstaltung@hamburger-kunsthalle.de.
- Seating Accomodation
- Foldable stools are generally only available for use in the permanent collection. In the special exhibitions, these are generally not permitted for reasons of space. There is no reservation option.

- What is hanging where?
- You may also find the works held by the Hamburger Kunsthalle in our Online Collection.

- Wifi
- We offer all visitors the use of our Wi-Fi as a free service. It is not necessary to enter a password.
